Organizational Mission Statement

The mission of CommonSpirit Health, the overarching company of Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) St. Vincent Hot Springs (SVHS) is: As CommonSpirit Health, we make the healing presence of God known in our world by improving the health of the people we serve, especially those who are vulnerable, while we advance social justice for all. (Evidence TL1-1, CSH Mission Statement, pg. 6)

Nursing Practice Initiative Aligned with Organizational Mission Statement

On May 24, 2022, Patricia (Pat) Brannin, Naloxone Program Director University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, contacted Teresa Lambert, MBA, BSN, RN, CHI SVHS Vice President of Patient Care Services/Assistant Chief Nursing Officer (role of CNO), to invite CHI SVHS to a Hospital Learning Community meeting. The meeting was for those who had agreed to initiate the NaloxHome program in their emergency department (ED). (Evidence TL1-2, Initial Contact) The purpose of the NaloxHome program is to help vulnerable people who suffer with addiction and are at risk for recurrent overdose and to provide education to patients and families. According to the Arkansas Department of Health (2020), Arkansas had the second highest prescribing rate for opioids in the nation. While overdoses had declined from 2018 to 2019, Arkansas saw an increase in overdoses during the pandemic years of 2020-2021.

NaloxHome is an initiative in nursing practice that enables CHI SVHS to provide free naloxone to patients or their caregivers via the hospital emergency room. The naloxone is dispensed to patients or caregivers of patients who have experienced or are at risk for an overdose. The purpose of the initiative is to save lives by removing barriers to naloxone access, including timeliness of emergency response. The NaloxHome initiative in nursing practice aligns with the organization’s mission statement to create healthier communities.

On May 25, 2022, Lambert decided to move forward with this program at CHI SVHS. Implementing this program would involve collaboration between Brannin; Lambert; Clinical Director of Nursing Renee Fechuch, MSN, BSN, RN; and Pharmacy Clinical Manager Christi Amerson, PharmD. The next steps included discussing training dates for the staff, placing the initial Narcan order, and determining the extent of educational resources needed for the program launch.

Lambert requested additional information about the program during a Microsoft Teams meeting on June 3, 2022. Brannin emailed Lambert a NaloxHome Program Introduction Portfolio on June 3 for her review. (Evidence TL1-3, Portfolio) (Evidence TL1-4, June 3 Meeting)

A follow-up meeting was held on June 6, 2022 with Lambert; Fechuch; Amerson; ED Nurse Manager Kayla Bullard, BSN, RN; and Director of Pharmacy Tiffany McCain, PharmD to discuss the program, process, supplies, and training; they set the go-live for July 1, 2022.

On June 16, 2022, a training session for ED clinical nurses was completed by Brannin and Lester Cupp, representative for the NaloxHome program, University of Arkansas Medicine. The NaloxHome Program Introduction Portfolio was presented to the clinical nurses. (Evidence TL1-5, Education Roster)

The go-live date for the NaloxHome nursing practice initiative was July 1, 2022. Clinical Nurse Barbara Younger, RN, in collaboration with Bethany Ruby, DO, ED Physician, sent the first dose home with one of the patients they cared for that day. As of April 1, 2023, CHI SVHS had dispensed 27 doses of naloxone, averaging three doses per month. The NaloxHome program emphasizes human dignity and respect, regardless of a patient’s situation. The NaloxHome program had saved as many as 27 patients’ lives. This is truly living out the SVHS mission of creating a healthier community for Hot Springs, Arkansas through support and education for this vulnerable patient population.
