History
Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) St. Vincent Hot Springs (SVHS) got its start during the Civil War. Hot Springs, Arkansas was nearly deserted, but after the war ended several families who had lived in Hot Springs returned and reopened stores and hotels. In 1888, Rev. Patrick McGowan purchased a hotel and surrounding property, which he donated to the Sisters of Mercy.
The hospital was opened to Hot Springs residents on September 24, 1888. The number of patients the sisters were seeing continued to grow, and by the turn of the century it was evident that expansion was needed. The need for expansion resulted in two relocations before the hospital settled into its current location.
SVHS underwent several name changes throughout its history. In 1888, Mother Aloysius was instructed to name the original hospital St. Joseph’s Infirmary, as names such as this were in vogue at the time. The name changed again in 1921, 1976, 1981, 2001, and 2012 because of expansion, the modernizing of facilities, and as part of a multi-state branding initiative.
In 2014, Mercy Health and Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) signed a definitive agreement to transfer ownership of Mercy Hot Springs hospital and medical group to CHI St. Vincent. The agreement recognized the extremely challenging healthcare environment in Arkansas and how working together would enhance the Catholic health ministry and strengthen access to healthcare. Despite the changes to its name, the same foundational mission and values that steered SVHS through its first 130 years still drive it today.
Hot Springs is the county seat of Garland County, making Garland County SVHS’s primary service area. However, SVHS’s services and standing as the only Level 2 Trauma Center in southwest Arkansas make it a regional referral center for cardiology, orthopedics, trauma, neurosciences, oncology, and critical care/pulmonary.
